In 2010, I brought the Honor Flight of Greater Dubuque to our city to honor those brave men and women who served their Country. The support and generosity that the community provided to Honor Flight was overwhelming. Now that the "Mission is Accomplished", there is an even more important mission before us.

The 100 Club of Dubuque.

Standing Behind the Men and Women Who Stand Up For Our Community

That is the motto of the 100 Club of Dubuque. I would like to invite you to become a member of the 100 Club of Dubuque because I believe you would like to make a difference. The 100 Club of Dubuque provides immediate financial assistance to surviving members of a family whose loved one has been " killed in the line of duty." As a retired Sheriff's Deputy and the father of an active duty police officer, I can attest to the importance of the 100 Club of Dubuque and the support it would bring to the family.

Every day young men and women enter a career as a firefighter, EMS provider, or law enforcement officer. They put their lives on the line to keep our communities protected and safe. As they begin those careers, their planning usually does not include setting aside finances for funeral expenses. If a family member is "killed in the line of duty", a $15,000 payment is made or a "death while on duty" would provide a $10,000 payment to be used at the family's discretion (i.e. funeral expenses,  transportation of out-of-state family members, mortgage payments, etc.). Until a substantial fund is established, the death payment ($15,000) may have to be adjusted.

The first I00 Club originated in Detroit in the early I950's following the death of a young police officer who was " killed in the line of duty". The officer's wife, who was pregnant at the time, was unable to afford the funeral expenses for her slain husband. A local car dealer wrote to one hundred of his friends requesting they each donate one hundred dollars. Each donated one hundred dollars and not only were the funeral expenses paid, but the young couple's mortgage was paid off and money set aside for the unborn child's education . . . thus the name "100 Club."

I'm sure the nineteen Granite Mountain "hot shot'' firefighters who lost their lives while battling a forest fire in Arizona during the summer of 20l3 probably didn't have funds set aside for their funerals. The 100  Club of Arizona went to all nineteen surviving families and presented each with a check for $15,000. Rockwell City, IA probably wasn't planning on having one of their four police officers killed during a stand-off on September 13, 2013. Even though the officer was an eight year veteran, I'm sure his family did not have  finances set aside for this most unfortunate tragedy.

The 100 Club of Dubuque will provide immediate financial aid to the families of those brave men and women who proudly serve Dubuque County in the capacity of police officer, deputy sheriff, firefighter, EMS provider, volunteer firefighter, volunteer EMS provider and park ranger. In addition to funds being paid for someone

"killed in the line of duty", funds may also be paid to the family of someone who has a loved one who "dies

while on duty". Depending on the growth of the fund, a 100 Club Scholarship program may be available for immediate family members of firefighters, EMS providers, volunteer firefighters, volunteer EMS provider, park ranger, and law enforcement officers that wish to continue their education beyond high school.

Membership dues for the 100 Club of Dubuque are as follows:

  • Individual Membership - $100 annually or Lifetime Membership of $1,000 single payment or payable in four annual $250 installments

  • Joint Membership (spouses) - $150 annually or Lifetime Membership of $1,500 single payment or payable in four annual $375 installments

  • Business Membership - $200.00 annually or Lifetime Membership of $2,000 single payment or payable in four annual $500 installments

Please consider becoming a member of the 100 Club of Dubuque and show the men and women whose careers put their lives in harms-way to keep our communities safe that you are willing to stand up for those who serve and protect our community.  Let's stand behind these men and women. Let's stand up for the families they leave behind because they made the ultimate sacrifice for our community. Let's stand tall knowing we are doing what's right.
